Whether it’s summertime or a cloudy winter day, sunscreen is an important part of your skincare routine.

Below, we’ve rounded up the best broad-spectrum face sunscreens that will protect you no matter what the weather throws at you.

Why Do I Need Sunscreen?

Sunscreen should be an essential part of your daily skincare routine. When properly applied, it protects you from harmful UV rays that can cause skin cancer while also preventing sun damage that can lead to premature wrinkles and visible signs of aging.

Sunscreen is crucial no matter what your skin type -- even if you have darker skin, because melanin simply isn’t enough.

There are two types of UV rays: UVA and UVB.

UVA rays penetrate more deeply into the skin and are responsible for the formation of skin cancer (which includes deadly forms such as malignant melanoma) while also playing a role in photoaging and wrinkle formation.

UVB rays are responsible for burning your skin. Most SPF (sun protection factor) measurements refer to UVB rays, although American sunscreens will include “broad spectrum” in the label if it also protects from UVA rays. Unfortunately, there is no way to tell how much UVA coverage you are getting but sunscreen with zinc or titanium provides UVA protection.

There are three types of sunscreens: physical, chemical, and combination. Physical sunscreens  have mineral-based ingredients (such as zinc oxide or titanium dioxide) that stay on the skin to block UV rays.

Chemical sunscreens usually have one or more active ingredients (such as avobenzone, homosalate, octinoxate, octisalate, octocrylene, or oxybenzone) and absorb the sun’s rays to protect your skin. These sunscreens are typically easier to rub into your skin and don’t leave a white cast.

You should be using a broad-spectrum sunscreen with a minimum of SPF 30, which blocks around 97% of UVB rays. (The higher the SPF after 30, the more incremental the difference is: for example, SPF 50 blocks 98%.) SPF 15 only protects against 93% of UVB rays, which is why SPF 30 is the recommended lowest amount you should apply.

One final note before we get to our review: when you apply sunscreen, you need to apply more than a pea-sized amount. You should be using around ¼ teaspoon on your face and a shot glass full for your body and reapplying every two hours you spend exposed to the sun.  (Don’t forget a lip balm with SPF too!)
